Zombies attack the Seattle Center! Seattle Zombie Walk – 10/10/09

Filed under: Flickr, cosplay, vegan, zombies — edpete @ 5:58 am

From Wikipedia:

A zombie walk (also known as a zombie mob, zombie march, zombie horde, zombie lurch, zombie shamble, zombie shuffle or zombie pub crawl) is an organized public gathering of people who dress up in zombie costumes. Usually taking place in an urban centre, the participants make their way around the city streets and through shopping malls in a somewhat orderly fashion and often limping their way towards a local cemetery or other public space (a series of taverns in the case of a zombie pub crawl).

So, Carter, Tim and I went to the Seattle Zombie Walk at the Seattle Center (Home of the Space Needle) yesterday.  We had an amazing time…  Not sure what the count of zombies turned out to be, maybe ~300?   Before the walk Carter and I went to John Kieltyka’s apartment downtown and he shot some pictures of us in his photo studio.

This was our 2nd Zombie walk and we recognized quite a few undead from our previous walk last year.  Once downtown we met up with Brent and his wife – Made up like freshly turn reporters…  After shambling through the Seattle Center and Lower Queen Anne for a couple hours we broke off and had dinner at The Bamboo Garden – Awesome Vegan Chinese food.  We definitely got a few looks in the restaurant as we sat to eat covered in fake blood and gaping wounds.

Good Times.

West Seattle Zombie Walk – 2008.

Filed under: EOTW - End Of The World, Flickr, meat, youtube, zombies — edpete @ 8:01 pm

Crazy Busy Weekend.  Carter and I found 2 geocaches.  Ed, Vickie, Carter and Claire went Trick or Treating at the West Seattle Junction.  Ed, Vickie, Carter, Claire, Ox and Waffle went to Pugoween in Shoreline.  And Then…

The West Seattle Zombie Walk!  Man, this shit was bananas.  B-A-N-A-N-A-S!  There had to be 200 to 300 Zombies lurching around West Seattle.  The horde started at the Rite Aid about 3 blocks from our house.  There were a few highlights…  ~200 zombies walking through the West Seattle Safeway.  That was fun.

The Chanting…

“What do we want?”  – “Brains!!!”

“When do we want them?”  -  “Brains!!!”

I don’t know when the next Zombie Walk is going to be, but I am really looking forward to it.  I think I will probably zombify myself as well…  Looking at all the zombies out there definitely gave me some ideas about how to do the makeup.  The whole thing was pretty well organized as well.  The Zombies were all really polite.  Very few civilians were attacked and eaten.  That was nice.  Oh, and they all waited for the lights to cross the streets.  even Zombies have to obey the law.

Vickie and Claire were at a friends house so I had to do up Carters makeup.  It turned out pretty good.  Some liquid latex, some fake blood, a little white face paint and some toilet paper…  awesome.

 Brains you can believe in!

Seattle Sakura-Con 2008… Cosplay Insanity!

Filed under: Flickr, anime, cosplay, sakuracon, zombies — edpete @ 11:48 pm

I went to Sakura-Con this weekend with Carter and Chad…  It was just crazy…  Probably more crowded than last year, but maybe a bit more fun.  I ran into Tim, BJ and Jonathan from work…

There were tons of pretty amazing cosplay costumes…  Carter and Chad went as Light and L from DeathNote.  They were stopped on Saturday about 15 times to get their picture taken.  Carter got hugged from 2 girls who really liked his costume.  I didn’t get hugged.  Sad.  Maybe it was the handle bar moustache.

We are going back tomorrow for the final day…  See you there?

Oh yeah, and we were going up the escalator and I saw this guy.  Twice.

Check out my Flickr Pool for More pics.

Norwegian Doomsday Vault Has Your Seeds.

Filed under: EOTW - End Of The World, science, zombies — edpete @ 12:35 am

When I read The Road, I wondered why no one was setting up some sort of large scale grow room to keep the food supply coming.  In the book all the plant and animal life has died off from a massive nuclear exchange and the resulting nuclear winter.  I don’t know if McCarthy put much, or any, hard science into this work…  I don’t think that was the point.   But I thought, if you got a few able bodies around, and could stop them from eating you first, you could build a big ass grow room.  There were plenty of materials and not many people trying to find uses for them.

Anyway, maybe someone up there in Norway got a hold of the book and thought more or less the same thing.  Cuz they decided to build a huge ass underground bunker.  You know, with dual blast doors, imbedded in a mountain near the north pole.  This thing ain’t for the people, of course.  It’s for the Seeds.  Like, lots of them.  So the official line is that it is meant to protect millions of seed samples from things like, Global Warming, Asteroids, Nuclear Strikes, stuff like that.  Zombies didn’t make the list…  Hmmm.

Check out lotsa stories about it at National Geographic.

No staff guards the front door, but more than a few roaming polar bears apparently do.

World War Z Final Book of the 2007 Booklist

Filed under: Books, lists, zombies — edpete @ 9:10 pm

I just squeaked in the last book of 2007 last night (grand total of 21 for the year), World War Z by Max Brooks.  The book was pretty enjoyable but, i’m not sure I should be reading a bunch of end of the world books back to back.  There was a bidding war over the rights to make WWZ into a movie.  The 2 big hitters were Plan B (Brad Pitts production company) and Appian Way (Leo Di Caprios Company).  Plan B won.
Here is the post about the Script.
I think a movie version of this would be pretty great if for no other reason the locations it would need to be shot in (or at least faked well).  The book is a series of interviews of survivors of the war and these survivors are from India, Russia, China, North and South America, Japan, etc…  A bunch of the stuff would be water based as tons of survivors try to flee aboard boats.  Huge Aircraft Carriers converted to floating refugee camps.  Crap like that, pretty cool.

First up for the new year?  The new Charlie Huston Book, Half The Blood Of Brooklyn.

Happy New Year.  Please God, No Zombies…
Carter and I are off to do some Snow Camping at Lake Wenatchee in the morning.

The Zombie Squad – Seattle?

Filed under: Books, camping, zombies — edpete @ 3:54 pm

I have gone from reading The Road, about post nuclear wasteland, to  reading World War Z, about a post Zombie wasteland.  Reading these books back to back has made me realize ‘the end’ is just around the corner.  With this new info in my head, I started looking around the internets for info on what to do when the poop and hits the fan.

First stop Wikipedia…  Turns out most of the survivalists out there are…  Wacko’s.  I kept looking…  After a few clicks I found The Zombie Squad.  These guys are fill the gap between the Northern Idaho / Ruby Ridge types and my delicate liberal sensitivities.  The web page is actually great.  It has tons of useful info on what to do in emergency situations, and best of all it uses ZOMBIES for the hypothetical emergency example.  Now these guys are the kinda wacko’s I can get behind…  More stuff aimed at my indie GenX demographic please, less religious right with guns and backup generator.

I am a bit bummed that there isn’t a local chapter of the zombie squad in Seattle.  Looks like they do lots of pizza and movie nights, Zombie walks for charity, food drives, etc…  There is even a link about there Zombie Con ‘07, a 5 camping, canoeing, zombie hunting / movie watching trip…  Sounds awesome.  Anyone in Seattle thinking about starting up a chapter?
