PAX07

Filed under: Video Games, nerd!!! — edpete @ 7:12 pm

Carter and I went to the Penny Arcade Expo yesterday.  It was pretty great.  The entire convention center was used for it.  We got to play a Naruto game that isn’t coming out for a few months.  There were booths from Microsoft, Nintendo, EA, Pink Godzilla, UbiSoft, etc, etc, etc…  Pretty Awesome.

We watched the guys who developed Stranglehold give a talk about working on the game.  They showed how some of it was developed, talked about the environment, blah blah blah…

We went to the concert at the end of the night and got to see Jonathan Coulton, DJ Frontalot, and the Minibosses.  Of the 3 I really liked Coulton the best.  He did his version of “Baby Got Back” that was awesome…  Instead of Bic lighters the floor of the convention center turned into a sea of DS’s.  Carter’s fav was the Minibosses, who play instrumental video game covers at 11.

Before walking into the concert we were walking by Wil Wheaton’s booth and there was no line.  For pretty much the entire day there was a MASSIVE line to see him.  We walked up and were told by security he was leaving.  He came over and said it was ok, which is pretty cool considering he had been manning that booth for hours.  Anyway, Wil Wheaton, definitely NOT a dick.

So far this year Carter and I have gone to the Emerald City Comic Con, Sakura-Con, San Diego Comic Con and now PAX07.  Going to all of these definitely makes me realize what a nerd I am not.  The majority of the people who attend these things seem to take their nerd-cred pretty seriously and I just can’t seem to hang at the end of the day.

This Guy Is A Dick

Filed under: random — edpete @ 7:12 pm

Dick

So Carter and I went to PAX07 on Saturday and had a great time.  At one point I took a picture of Carter playing his DS in one of the lounge areas.  There were about 200 people sitting around with their faces buried in DS’s, which was a very common sight.  And then there was this guy…  Talking on his cell phone.  I didn’t see him, didn’t realize that he was there, didn’t care.  I took the photo and started walking back over to where Carter was laying on his bean-bag…

That’s when this guy says, “Hope you got a nice picture.”  Super sarcastically.  I guess he didn’t like being in my photo.  Had he not said anything I would have deleted this picture because it wasn’t that good of a shot and thought nothing of it.   But instead I cut  out just his face and posted it to the web.

Congratulations, Dick.

Richard Stark

Filed under: Books, noir — edpete @ 4:36 pm

PointBlank

I finished The Man With The Getaway Face last night.  It is a Richard Stark novel based on his Parker character.  His book The Hunter was the basis for the Mel Gibson movie Payback and the Lee Marvin movie Point Blank.  Super Noir.  I think the Gibson movie is awesome.  I have a hard time deciding which is better the directors cut or the released movie.  I actually like them both quite a bit.  The Lee Marvin movie also great in the early super 70’s kinda way.

Anyway, Go buy some Richard Stark books.  A lot of them are out of print and Barnes and Noble didn’t have any the last time I stopped in.  Good reason to hit up your local used bookstore.

Reptile Zoo

We stopped at the reptile zoo on the way home from camping.  Carter and Claire love that place.  Two headed turtles, albino aligators, 10 deadliest snakes, and more…

Camping At Lake Wenatchee

Filed under: camping — edpete @ 10:23 pm

Ed, Carter and Claire drove up to Lake Wenatchee and did some car camping w/ Mike, Leah, Aidan and Dexter (the dog).  It was pretty fun, but a bit chilly for the lake.  I was definitely glad Mike and Leah were there as I don’t have nearly enough gear for that type of camping.  They brought cooking gear, tarps to go over the camping area, extra chairs, etc…  I have a whole list of stuff to buy before going up again.

Aidan

 Smores

Claire got a little messy out in the woods… Then she ate some smores.

Carter Wet

Carter threw a stick for Dexter.  Then he fell in.

Book List

Filed under: Books, lists — edpete @ 1:56 pm

I try to get through 12 books a year…  Some years very successful, some not so much.  I think I am pretty well on track for the year…  Here is the list (that I can think of) so far for the year.

I am currently in the middle of Crooked Little Vein by Warren Ellis.  I picked it up at the comic-con and will probably finish it in the next couple of days.
