So Carter and I went to see a movie this weekend. We saw “Balls Of Fury” so we probably deserve any badness that happened to us. The movie was playing at the Pacific Place here in Seattle. Carter was standing behind me as we took the escalator up to the 3rd floor. I got to the top and stepped off when I heard a pretty ugly ripping sound behind me, then Carter yelling “My Shoe!” I turned around just as he ripped his foot free from the top of the escalator. The entire front of his shoe was ripped off and was sucked into the escalator without an alarm going off or the thing stopping or anything.
So accidents happen. No big deal, Carter wasn’t hurt, and really all he was worried about was getting another pair of Orange Crocs.
Well, then I did a search on the old internets for “crocs” and “escalators” and found out that tons of people have had this happen to them. But, I also found this quote:
The majority of escalator incidents result from improper use or poor maintenance, said a Crocs Japan spokesperson.
“We sincerely hope this leads to added attention and effort being placed on improving escalator designs and maintenance regulations,” she added.
While I understand that if the Crocs company admits to a possible problem they would just be giving ammo to the lawsuit that I’m sure is coming their way. It still sorta sucks that they blame the escalators and basically deny that there is a problem with the shoe. Do a search on the old interweb for ”Nike” and “Escalators”… Know how many hits for missing toes you find? Nada. Zip. Zero. Of course with Nike you can do a search for “Nike” and “Sweatshop” and well…
Crocs Pros – Sweatshop Free
Crocs Cons – Missing Toes, Corporate Denial
Nike Pros - Ten little piggies when you get off the escalator
Nike Cons – None. As long as you live in a 1st world country and don’t have a conscience.
I wonder where I need to go to join that class action lawsuit?

I have been on a Crime-Noir-Pulp kick this year… A lot of this has been inspired by reading the Comic Criminal by Ed Brubaker. The single issues of Criminal have great back pages with interviews and essays about the pulp field. I have bought 70’s era DVD’s (see Point Blank post), and been introduced to new authors. I finished Charlie Huston’s newest book, The Shotgun Rule, last night. It is about a group of high school kids who stumble onto a MethLab and decide to rob it. Turns out this is a bad idea. I’m not sure if the overall moral of the book is ‘don’t rob meth dealers’, but I am pretty sure that is good advice. One thing I really liked about the book was even the cool kids play D&D. I’m not sure how realistic this is, but it makes me feel a bit better about raising Carter on a steady diet of D&D and Video Games.
