It seems like the day after Christmas is a bad day to release a book. Then again, i’m not in marketing or publishing, so I could be very wrong. I’m sure I will be fighting crowds at Barnes and Noble to buy Charlie Hustons next book, Half the Blood of Brooklyn. It is the 3rd Joe Pitt novel from Huston. I burned through the first couple in about a day each… I don’t know that Vampire Fiction is real big on my favorites list, but Charlie Huston is way up there on my favorite writers right now. His take on vampires is pretty interesting… They definitely do not have an easy life in his world. Not enough food (apparently even in Brooklyn you can’t just go around willy nilly killing people for too long), rival vampire factions (hippie vampires, old school cult vampires, old money vampires), Van Helsing style killers who just want to prove they exsist and that fatal sun allergy. Immortality doesn’t seem to last that long in Joe Pitts world. Oh, yeah and his ‘girl friend’ is HIV positive, so he has some personal dilemma about turning her.
Go buy the first two. Now.
Or borrow mine… Vickie is reading the first one right now.

I guess with the exception of the Warren Ellis book and 2 of the Huston books (Already Dead and No Dominion) the year has been spent reading crime fiction. That’s not a horrible thing and there are certainly some super enjoyable reads on the above list. Let me know if you want to borrow one.
I have The Difference Engine next to my bed and know I should really pick it up. This book is seen as one of the seminal works in the Steam Punk genre. William Gibson and Bruce Sterling wrote this it in 1991, and I would like to get this book onto my completed list before it is 20 years old.

Can you believe she’s had kids? How does this busy mother of 2 keep her looks up? In all fairness, there are some pretty bad pictures of me out there too. But, Damn.

Sometimes I hate being right.

Just finished another Hard Case Crime book. This one was a pretty over the top crime book… It had dot-com crack dealers and a guy trying for the world record in serial killings. There is a great scene where the guy who lost everything in a failed internet start up decides to try crack. He achieves total clarity right after the first hit and decides crack is the wave of the future. Turns out working in fast paced world of high tech start ups doesn’t necessarily prepare you for a life of crime.
