Iron Man Movie Review – "All sorts of Bad Ass!"

Filed under: Comics, movies — edpete @ 8:10 am

My buddy Troy went to a sneak preview of Iron Man last night.  Here is his quick and dirty review…

It was all sorts of BAD ASS!  Action and funny and not watered down by a horribly long drawn-out love story.

I never read the comics, so I can’t compare the movie to the comics.

And there are plot holes, but the fun of the movie was worth overlooking them.

Not sure how spoilerish you wanted me to get, so I won’t go into any specifics unless you want me too.

My biggest casting issue was Terrance Howard as an Air Force Colonel.  Too young, and seemed more like Robert Downey Jr’s buddy instead the military liason to a weapons company.

Carter wants to make a movie.

Filed under: DIY, movies — edpete @ 9:14 pm

Carter wants to make a movie so we went out to Dot’s and did some shooting.  We bought him some camo and let him run around the back 40 with some fake guns.  We had didn’t shoot enough for a movie…   So here is the trailer:  Elementary Assassins

Couple New Books For 2008. Andrew Vachss’ The Getaway Man

Filed under: Books, Comics, lists — edpete @ 11:57 am

I finished a couple of new books recently.  First up was a novel based on The Ultimates series of comic books.  I decided I needed a break from Cormac McCarthy novels and thought a comic book novel would do the trick.  Wrong.  After reading some pretty great prose the thing to do is not read crap.  I don’t know that book Against All Enemies was horrible, but it certainly didn’t stand up after reading Blood Meridian.  I just don’t think comics translate well into novel form.
Next up was The Getaway Man by Andrew Vachss.  Vachss has been recommended to me and I have always shied away, mainly because of the subject matter he deals with…  His other job is as a lawyer dealing with child abuse cases.   The Getaway Man, however, is a straight up Pulp Noir style book.  The main character is a driver in a series of heists.  This book I blew through in a night.  I really enjoyed this book.  Simple.  Great pacing.  Nice.  I enjoyed this but don’t know how many more Vachss I will read.
I think I might go back and burn through another McCarthy or two…

READ.

Booklist 2008:

  1. The Getaway Man By Andrew Vachss
  2. The Ultimates: Against All Enemies By Alex Irvine
  3. Child Of God By Cormac McCarthy
  4. All The Pretty Horses By Cormac McCarthy
  5. 361 (Hard Case Crime) By Donald Westlake
  6. The Genocides by Thomas M Disch
  7. Blood Meridian: Or the Evening Redness in the West by Cormac McCarthy
  8. Spook Country by William Gibson
  9. Half the Blood of Brooklyn By Charlie Huston
  10. I Am Legend By Richard Matheson

The Staff Enrichment And Development Council is handing out treats.

Filed under: denial, treats — edpete @ 4:22 pm

Super Dot Peterson had to go to the ER last night with some stomach pain…  They brought her in and did some scans, turns out she had to undergo some pretty major emergency surgery.  So Vickie and I took the day off and headed to the hospital.  Dot is going to be fine after about 4 months of ‘therapy’…

Anyway.  At one point I decided to wander the halls.  This sign was posted on the door of the Staff Lounge…
enrichment
I had to take a picture with my phone…

Damn!  Why isn’t there a Staff Enrichment And Development Council at Microsoft?  At times I have been known to participate in teamwork.  I like treats.  Sounds pretty great to me.

Really though…  How horrible does the environment have to be to have that sign posted?  How dysfunctional is the staff at this hospital?  Where do these ‘treats’ come from?  The medicine cabinet?  The sign almost looks like something out of The Office…  What do they hand out when they see someone Not participating in teamwork?  yikes.

We went to Blue C Sushi Sunday. What Would Jesus Eat? Fish. Duh. Probably Vegas Rolls. I bet Jesus is a sucker for Vegas rolls and big cup of his own blood. I am into the Tofu rolls myself. Duh. Not so much with the blood.

The King Of Kong – A Fistful Of Quarters… Get Chumpatized!

Filed under: Video Games, movies, nerd!!! — edpete @ 10:32 pm

Carter and I watched The King Of Kong – A Fistful Of Quarters tonight.  It was in the netflix "watch now" list, which is pretty great.  Getting to stream movies is great, and the video quality is really pretty good.
The movie revolves around a guy from Redmond, Steve Weibe, trying to break the world record in Donkey Kong.  There is sort of an old guard of video gamers who hold a bunch of these records; Donkey Kong, Pac Man, Missile Command, etc…  Billy Mitchell holds the record in Donkey Kong when the movie starts, he also held records for Burgertime, Pac Man, etc.  The new guy from Redmond has to fight to get his record recognized.
The movie really makes a couple of characters seem petty and underhanded.  A couple of the facts have been disputed by some of the people in the film.  The movie was funny and makes you really care about Steve Wiebe – the Redmond dude.  You also really get the impression that Billy Mitchell is a royal douche-bag.  I wonder if that last impression is fair, but he certainly is well groomed.  In a bad mullet kinda way.

Updating WordPress to 2.5 – Playing with themes.

Filed under: nerd!!!, random, web — edpete @ 10:57 am
Technorati Tags: ,

I backed up the blog today and upgraded WordPress to v2.5 – the admin page changed a bit and there are a lot of security updates.  The update was completely painless, no hiccups at all.  I think the deal tends to be, back-up and prepare for the worst and everything is cool.  If you don’t back-up everything goes to hell.

I also downloaded a buncha themes…  I have been playing with them, there are plenty that I ‘kinda’ like…  I think it is going to come down to lots of tweaking.  Let me know if you hate the new look.  I think I do.
