2009 San Francisco Wonder Con – Day 1

Filed under: Comics, nerd!!! — edpete @ 1:29 am

Just wrapping up our first day at Wonder Con in San Francisco.  It was pretty great.  Wonder Con is way less crowded than the San Diego Comic-Con, so it was super easy to move around and see what we wanted to see.  We saw several Panels today, as I look over the list I just realized that we saw a Network TV panel, a Comic Book Studio panel, a video game panel and a movie panel.  Funny.

One highlight of the show was walking around on the convention floor and having Tom Kenny walk to me and saying; “Hey, how are you…  I think I met you at San Diego, right?”  I was sort of shocked as because, I had seen him in San Diego but didn’t talk to him or anything.  I think he had me confused with someone else, but he was super cool…  We ended up talking about how much nicer Wonder Con seemed than Comic Con, then he talked to Carter for a few minutes, asking him what grade he as in, he told Carter he like his Cthulhu shirt.  He posed for a picture with Carter and signed my moleskin notebook for Carter and Claire.   Check out the link above for his massive credits, beside Spongebob Squarepants…  He also said he was going to be doing some voice work on a few upcoming Marvel projects.

The Star Wars panel was really fun.   It was about 2 hrs of fan made movies from based on the Star Wars universe.  I think several of these were more entertaining than the last couple of real Star Wars movies…   I also got an autograph from Kenan Thompson.  Made it out the door with 3 new Umbrella Academy comics and the 1st Scott Pilgrim trade, pretty cheap day.

Panels:

  • New TV Show.  Sit Down, Shut Up
  • Boom! Studios

The Peterson boy’s found 3 new Geocaches today.  Brings our yearly total to 7.  We set a goal to find 50 this year, so we are slightly behind schedule…  I’m feeling good about this though, spring and summer are coming, and we can really clean house then.  Anyone care to join us our next hunt?

Carter spent the day making a Stop Motion video of Valve’s Portal out of Legos

Filed under: Video Games, movies, video, youtube — edpete @ 7:00 pm

There is some sniper fire in the middle of video that is a bit out of place from the Portal universe…  But you know, the kid took a little artistic license…   I think he has the stuff to be the next Michael Bay!

2009 Movie List – Slumdog Millionaire

Filed under: movies — edpete @ 11:32 pm

SlumDogposter_lg

I saw Slumdog Millionaire, director Danny Boyle’s new film, tonight.   This movie is getting tons of love right now, and rightly so.  It is charming (in a good way), it has some great cinema photography, an great mix of beautiful scenery blended with atrocious urban slum horror.  The acting is great throughout, the children in the story are amazing…  Thinking about the acting it is pretty amazing that the majority of the kids in this movie are newcomers.  Compare this level of acting with the supporting cast in Grand Torino, Eastwood could take some casting lessons from Boyle.  I’m not sayin’, I’m just sayin’…

I took Carter to see it, not having prescreened it.  I asked if he thought it should have been ‘R’.  He gave a well thought out answer that there were no real specific scenes that haven’t been in PG-13 movies before.  But, he felt that some of the themes in the movie were a little dark.  There are some depictions of Mumbai poverty, and abuse of children in these settings that are a little rough.

Overall though all the love is deserved, I’m not sure it is best picture material, but it is an excellent movie…   Someone needs to give the actors in this picture some roles…  Unfortunately M. Night Shyamalan has gotten a hold of Dev Patel for his live action The Last Airbender.   Freida Pinto has nothing on IMDB after Slumdog, what the hell???

The Uncler Better Than The Wrestler?

Filed under: movies, politics, random — edpete @ 9:42 pm

Funny or Die has a great parody of The Wrestler, starring Uncle Sam.  The economy is in a tail spin.  Confidence is down, Unemployment is up.  The 90’s were awesome, then Bush had to come along and ruin everything.  The 2000’s suck.

The Taking of Pelham 123 Remake Trailer is online

Filed under: movies — edpete @ 12:53 pm

taking-of    vs  Pelham_1_2_3__por_malevaje-1

I really love the original The Taking of Pelham 123, starring Robert Shaw and Walter Matthau.   Quentin Tarantino borrowed a ton of material from this film for Reservoir Dogs, The characters in Pelham go by the names Mr. Blue, Mr. Grey, Mr Green, etc…  They all dress in very similar clothes and glasses.   It is easy to see why Taratino would take cues from this movie.

Tony Scott (ridleys brother) is taking a stab at remaking this classic.  Scott is very hit and miss…  He directed True Romance (hit!) and The Fan (miss!), Enemy of the State (hit!) and Domino (miss!)…  He has a number of serviceable films under his belt, Spy Game, Crimson Tide, Man on Fire, Top Gun?…   He just doesn’t instill a lot of confidence…  He is definitely not a director whose work I seek out, but for whatever reason I have seen most (maybe all) of his movies.

For his Pelham remake he cast one of his regular stars Denzel Washington (hit!) and John Travolta (oh dear) in the Matthau and Shaw roles…  The trailer looks close enough to the original to give me hope, but it just looks so ‘big action-y’…  Another potential saving grace for the remake is the screen play was done by Brian Helgeland (Big Hit!), the directors cut of is movie Payback is amazing…  If Helgeland threw his a-game at this…  Maybe it can be saved…

So…  Go rent (or buy) the original Taking of Pelham 123 and the Payback: Straight Up – The Director’s Cut…  I own them both…  and you should too.

Now watch the trailer…   Note that there a lot of car crashes…  why?
