I have been looking forward to the Spike Jonze directed Where The Wild Things Are for a very long time. There were lots of rumors of a rocky production and some fights with the studio… but there is finally a trailer online… And it looks pretty great.

I can dig some Lovecraftian Horror… But Carter? He is an absolute sucker for all things Lovecraft. He has a Cthulhu stuff animal. We bought him the complete works of HP Lovecraft for Christmas. Boom-Studios have several Cthulhu books that Carter reads. I think he is gonna be pretty stoked when he sees that they are making a movie based on the Image Comics graphic novel. Ron Howard is set to direct. Ron Howard. Maybe this one won’t be a blatant Oscar play from Mr. Howard. Maybe.

Vickie taught a class on making plushie monsters to a bunch of kids from Gatewood. This was one of the items that we donated at the Gatewood Auction last week. The kids designed their own monster and Vickie helped them cut out the pattern and sew them up. Plushies For The Win.

Vickie and I went to the Gatewood Elementary School PTA auction last night. This was the 5th year for the event and it seemed to be one of the smoothest yet. The auction raises money for the Gatewood PTA, which, in turn helps the school. It is always fun to socialize with other parents and teachers without the kids around.
Our table spent vast amounts of money, with the underlying understanding that it was ‘for the kids’, but really we just wanted to ‘win’. Oh, we won alright…
A sample of we ‘won’:
- A garden sculpture. By someone without a yard.
- A row boat. By someone without a means to transport it.
- A night in a downtown hotel. At around 3 times what it would have cost just calling them.
- A tray of 10 Cosmopolitans for our table. Around $40 per drink.
- First choice at Dessert table. $300 Coconut Cream Pie.
There was also a point that they raised money to fund a teacher for the school. Carter and Claire are really lucky to attend a school that has extremely small class sizes for a public school. One reason is that the PTA raises enough money to pay for a teacher. They started bids at $1000, and a couple of people gave at that level, they then worked their way down… It took quite a long time to get through all of the people sponsoring the teacher and in the end raised… Lots.
The work that goes into one of these events is pretty amazing. One of the Gatewood PTA parents, Nicole, was the event chairperson and I’m sure it was a full time job for her over the last few months. Huge Success. Thanks Nicole and Crew.

The Science Fiction / Fantasy webpage IO9.com used one of my photos on a recent blog post about the Matt Fraction / Michael Chabon panel I attended at WonderCon. The article does a great job of summing up the panel, moderated by a great comic writer (Fraction) and a Pulitzer prize winner (Chabon). Read the article… And admire the amazing photo skills from one Ed Peterson…
