Trailer for Sam Rockwell’s new movie Moon

Filed under: movies — edpete @ 8:29 pm

Sam Rockwell’s new starring vehicle, Moon, looks excellent.  I really like Rockwell and am pretty sure he has the chops to carry what looks to be pretty much a one man show.   Who doesn’t love a little brainy sci-fi.

IO9.COM loves some TofuGuns

Filed under: Flickr, comic-con, nerd!!!, photography, web — edpete @ 8:48 pm

IO9.com is a pretty great little SciFi blog, that is part of the Gawker network of websites…  Gawker runs Gawker.com, jalopnic.com, Kotaku.com, gizmodo.com, etc…  Car sites, Gaming sites, Gadget sites, all good stuff…  Turns out those boys at IO9 like my flickr streamThis post at IO9 used a picture from Comic-Con, and This Post used one of my pictures of Michael Chabon and Matt Fraction at Wonder-Con…   Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I have several hundred nerd convention pictures in flickr stream?  Maybe.

Anyway it is cool that they use my pictures and actually credit them as well.  Go check out some Gawker stuff.  Do It!

The Hurt Locker – Kathryn Bigelow FTW

Filed under: movies — edpete @ 5:46 pm

Kathryn Bigelow has an interesting Filmography.  Near Dark and Point Break are both a lot of fun.   The Hurt Locker looks pretty cool from this trailer.  You don’t see a whole of women directing action movies.  Go Check it.

Sakura-Con 2009 Wrap-Up – Manga / Anime / CosPlay Craziness…

Filed under: conventions, cosplay, sakuracon — edpete @ 8:05 pm

Sakura-Con was last weekend, and it was as crazy as ever…  Probably more so in fact.  The crowd was huge.  Cosplay insanity everywhere.  The intersection of my interests and the Sakura-Con are actually really low.  I don’t read much manga or watch many anime shows and I’m not real big in the furry culture.  I guess there is a certain train-wreck appeal.  Some of these people really go all out…

My only major complaint was the registration.  Carter and I went on Saturday, waited about 30 minutes in a pretty massive line and didn’t move.  We left.  A friend stuck it out and it took him over 3 hours.  3 Hours!  Carter and I went back Sunday, the line was tiny, it still took over 40 minutes.  They had 2 staff registering people and 5 staffers standing around chatting.  I don’t know the difference between Emerald City and Sakura-Con but the line went super quick at Emerald City and it just crawled at Sakura-Con.  I really hope they fix the process going forward.

This was 3rd convention I have been to in 2 months; Wonder-Con San Francisco, Emerald City Comic-Con and Sakura-Con.   Now about 3 months of rest before San Diego with the whole family.  Then PAX.

The Thermals Rockin’ Seattle’s Neumo’s 4/11/09

Filed under: rock — edpete @ 6:35 pm

A bunch of guys from work met up at Neumo’s last night for the The Thermals show.  Tom, Tim, Noel, Joe, Mark, Eric, Bobby, Ed all made it…  I have probably seen The Thermals live half a dozen times, and they are always great.  Their new CD was just released on Tuesday so they had plenty of new material to show off.    The last time I saw them, a year or so ago, they had a 2nd guitar player, last night was a straight-up 3 piece.  Some of the songs really could use the 2nd guitarist, it would just give Hutch a little less to worry about…  But still, amazing.

Right before they stopped, Hutch said; “this ones for you Seattle”, and they broke into a Nirvana cover.  I am pretty sure in the entire time I have lived in Seattle and seen shows here this was the first time I have seen a band cover Nirvana.   Awesome.

The guys from work are thinking about starting a “Rock Club”, sorta like a book club, but just meet up monthly for a rock show.  I’m in, are you?

I got the playlist!

Emerald City Comic-Con 2009 Wrap-Up.

Filed under: Uncategorized — edpete @ 10:19 pm

Carter and I went to the Emerald City Comic-Con this weekend.   Man.  We have been hitting so many of these recently; San Francisco Wonder-Con, San Diego Comic-Con, Penny Arcade Expo, Emerald City Comic-Con, Sakura-Con…  There are several comic writers and artists who now recognize us when we walk up.  The guys from Boom-Studios are all super nice, Matt Fraction, Brian Michael Bendis, Ben Templesmith were all really cool.  They all signed books and chatted with us a bit.    The crowd is much more manageable than Wonder-Con and San Diego Comic-Con is just stupid crowded.

Next weekend – Sakura Con.

Some highlights:

  • The Marvel panel – Brian Michael Bendis, Matt Fraction, Ed Brubaker, Rick Remender, C.B. Cebulski, etc were on hand to talk about their books and take questions.  These panels are always pretty funny, the random questions from uber-nerds, the guys on stage swearing and making fun of each other…
  • Seeing Wil Wheaton standing talking to Ross Ritchie from Boom-Studios…  I had read Wil’s twitter account earlier that day and he had a post about playing D&D – Things you don’t want to hear from the DM: "The dragon crits."  -  So as Carter and I were walking by I said, “The dragon crits”…  He turned from Ross and goes into this long speech about how his party was fighting a dragon, the damage dealt, how it was defeated…  Wil Wheaton…  Awesome.
  • Picked up tons of books…  12 issues of DMZ, Emerald City Monsters and Dames, Ben Templesmith Sketchbook, Scott Pilgrim Vol 2 and 3, Black Metal, Never As Bad As You Think (free from the Boom-Studios guys), a bunch of singles, Penny Arcade TShirt (Carter), Buttons (ed and carter), Invincible Iron Man (signed by Matt Fraction).
  • The guys dressed as Hazel and Cha-Cha from the Umbrella Academy.
